A fence is the thing you look at most and think about least. It is also, on a lot of properties, the greenest surface there is.
Vinyl is the most common fence down here, and it is the one that cleans up closest to new. It takes low pressure and a solution that kills the green rather than scours it off.
Wood needs the same care as a deck: along the grain, and no further than the point where the surface starts to lift. Wrought iron and aluminum rail is mostly about the salt film and the rust spots where the coating has gone.
Anything under trees, or backing onto water or wetland, holds damp for longer and grows a film far quicker than a fence on an open street. On those runs a yearly wash keeps on top of it, where leaving it three years turns a wash into a much harder job.
