Galloway covers a lot of ground between the Parkway and the bay, and most of it is wooded. Pine cover and sandy soil make for a different sort of dirt than the islands ever see.
Under pine the ground stays damp and the roof stays shaded, and that is exactly the combination algae wants. The north slope streaks black while the front of the house still looks respectable.
Pine debris is the other half of it. Needles pack into gutters far more tightly than leaves do, and they hold water rather than letting it through, so gutters here fill up faster and stain the fascia while they are at it.
It is usually the same three jobs here: a soft wash on the roof for the streaking, a house wash for the shaded elevations, and the gutters cleared of needles. Booked together they are one visit and one price, which is how most Galloway houses are done. The eastern side towards Reeds Bay and the refuge is a different job again: marsh damp with no shade to speak of, which greens up fences and bulkhead rail quicker than anywhere else in the township.
